PROJECT ONE

GETTING TO KNOW ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN THROUGH 2D ABSTRACT ART

PROJECT 1A - SKETCHING ELEMENTS OF DESIGN IN NATURE AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

For our first assignment which is project 1A is about getting to know the basic design elements through observing nature and built environment by skteching the apparent and hidden design elements in nature. So, our lecturers Ms Dee had organised a one day trip for us to the KLCC Park at Kuala Lumpur to help us in our project. Through the trip, we were required to observe nature and build environment and capture design elements apparent or unseen with bare eyes. After that, we were required to produce 8 A5 sketches and 2 A4 abstract art through our findings, understanding and interpretation of basic elements. Each of the sketches and abstract art have to include an explanation page(s) behind the artwork to further explain and identify the required elements of design.

The 5 design elements are LINES, FORM, TEXTURE, SHAPE, and HUE for both nature and built environment.

REFLECTION

Throughout this first project, I've learnt the theories of basic design elements through observing nature and by sketching the apparent and hidden design elements in nature in KLCC park. For me, it was an great experience to explore the design element which can be found in the nature and built environment. Besides that, I've also learnt some sketching techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling, stipping and others by using different kinds of artline pen. Through the explanation of the drawings, I found that the design elements are actually interrelated to each other because I've learnt that the relationship between how dots form a line, how lines form a shape and how shape create a form. It was a cool and good exercise for us to learn how to sketch nicely and I really enjoyed it.For me,I think I should have more improvement on my drawing in order to let my sketching looks more realistic and amazing so that it can impress people at first sight.

PROJECT 1B - DAILY ITEMS ARTWORK EXPLORING PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

For the second assignment which is project 1B, we were required to create nine abstract artworks by using the given daily materials to show our understanding of design principles, elements and compositions. We were required to display all nine artworks as one and transport the nineartwork into the10 artwork and also two A2 size presentation boards explaning about the design principles, elements, compositions, theme and technique which was applied to the artworks.

We had to form a group of four among ourselves, and I grouped with my fellow friends, which are Leo,Zhao Wei and Medalline. Madaline is our group leader, and the representative to choose our daily material. When we choosen cotton wool as our design material, because our lectural said she never see nice artwork done by cotton wool before hence we decide to take it as our challendge. During every single tutorial section we keep brainstorming to think the best word and best characteristic to represent out material. After all the tutorial sessions, considerations and modifications, we decided to use rubber sheet as our base and we chose the sewing method to sew the cotton wool on the rubber sheet. The reason we using rubber sheet as our base is because it produce static force when the cotton wool is attatched on the rubber sheet. Our nine finalized in glue-free form and the design principles are Movement, Unity, Hierarchy, Rhythm, Radial, Balance Symmetry, Centralized, Random and Dominance.

REFLECTION

In the previous project, I 've learnt the design element .So in this second project we were required learn about the design principle and apply the design principle and design element as well as to understand the characteristics of an object before we start to produce the 9 artworks. Initially it was a challendging project for us after teacher say that she did'nt saw any nice artwork from cotton wool before. From my opinion, I have opposite view from my lecturer and I think that cotton wool is a organic free form object and it can produce any organic as well as geomatric form artwork too. From the start of the project,we had been used the word 'Tangle Untangle' as our initial idea. After researching and discussing for a few days, we've produced a good idea which was the picking fibre to the cotton wool. Having a good idea doesn't mean to manage to produce great artworks. We have use well the most unique characteristic of the cotton wool to protrays the design principles in the artworks, at the same time we also have to consider the binding factors which makes the artworks look like one which is the final 10th artwork. After all the efforts we put on, we managed to complete the artworks and presentation before the presentation day.

On the presentation day,our lecturer has invited 2 of our senior as panel to evaluate our project. After the presentation,Ms Dee suggested us can also be used other method like put the cotton on the rubber sheet and randomly creating design principle by usiing the static force which can be found when the cotton attatched on the rubber sheet. We got B+ grade for this project which means we required to brainstorming more and more to archive higher and better.Besides, we also learned how to manage our time in order to increase the productivity of completing the works. Teamwork and caring are also important in doing this project, and I'm grateful to have them as my group mates.
